The Amangalla Hotel derives its name from 'Aman', meaning peace in Sanskrit and ' Galla', the Sinhalese name for the historical town of 'Galle,' where it is located. This refurbished, classical colonial hotel has a rich history dating back to over 400 years when it was used as the headquarters of the Dutch commander of Galle and later as a billet for British soldiers. Cleverly and sensitively restored as a luxury hotel, the Amangalla now provides luxurious hospitality while retaining its colonial grandeur.
The glorious history of its past is reflected in its high vaulted ceilings, chandeliers and period furniture. Much of the original building including the facade, corridors and the main hall along with a lot of the furniture has been restored.
Guest accommodation comprises of bedrooms, chambers and suites with polished Burma teak floors, all furnished with colonial four poster beds, antique Pettegama chests, crisp white linen, rich mahogany and rattan planters.
The chambers and suites have a verandah or a terrace with views that look out at either the lush tropical gardens or the ramparts of the Dutch Fort. All the rooms provide magnificent views of the ancient town and its many elements such as the Dutch church, clock tower, ramparts of the old fort and the sea. A large swimming pool, surrounded by palms, has a courtyard with sun loungers and 'ambalamas' or rest pavilions where guests can relax.
