Volunteering Projects
Since thousands of years, travellers have flocked to the island, enchanted by its beauty. Sri Lanka today is a country whose economy is largely driven by tourism. Being a responsible tour company that strongly believes in ‘giving back’ to society, we are convinced that it is the travellers who are seeking and finding this new destination who can make a real difference by contributing in their own ways to further social development.

Travellers who book one of our many tours and holidays in Sri Lanka contribute indirectly to society by way of our responsible tourism initiative, whereby part of the profits from every booking is donated to human development projects in the country.

For Those seeking to directly indulge in meaningful travel while at the same time being able to experience this enchanting region can choose from a host of voluntary projects:

1. Post tsunami relief projects: Millions of dollars in foreign aid have been spent on tsunami relief in Sri Lanka since December 2004, but four years later, some of the new settlements still lack basic facilities. A recent study found that over 60 per cent of all the new relocated occupants surveyed found the amenities, including water, worse than before the tsunami. With donor aid for tsunami projects ending, significant support is still needed for infrastructure. This support need not necessarily be in the form of financial aid. Volunteers can get involved in projects to rebuild communities that have been permanently damaged by the deluge.

2. Teaching English: In Sri Lanka the medium of instruction in schools is generally Sinhalese/ Tamil (the local language).Towards the cities and urban areas, students tend to attend English medium schools since it helps in higher education and in securing jobs anywhere in the country. However a large majority of rural schools use the local language as the medium of instruction and empowering students with English language training is definitely something that would contribute to their future growth. Travellers interested in imparting English education training could engage in providing English language training to students of all age groups. This could involve teaching for a few hours a day.
3. Working in Rural clinics: Those who are certified medical professionals and interested in getting involved in voluntary projects can work in private rural clinics and provide healthcare to the rural populace.

4. Working with orphanages: : You could get involved in working with children in orphanages and contribute to the day-to-day workings in your own special way.

Volunteering projects obviously require longer periods of stay so as to make a substantial difference to society. We recommend a minimum stay of a month for travellers wanting to engage in volunteering projects. Accommodation is organised with local families so that you get to experience the essence of rural Sri Lanka. Alternatively, you could also choose to stay in a beach resort close to the area in which you will be doing work and use that as your base.
